The Government of Catalonia is planning to introduce a tourist tax to be paid by national and foreign tourists alike.

Tourists would pay between € 1 and € 3 a night depending on the type of accomodation.

Catalonia last night was battered by a rain storm with strong gusts of wind and waves up to four meters high.

This time around no damage has been reported to the promenade along S'Abanell, the beach along Blanes' tourist district.

Blanes' old fish market -- the red-roofed building next to fish restaurant Can Flores -- has been demolished.

The building, abandoned years ago in favor of the town modern fish auction, was in poor repair. Heavy rains caused its rood to cave in.

7 - Blanes approves ambitious redevelopment project for tourist area beachfront

The city of Blanes has approved an ambitious redevelopment project for the beachfront in the resort's popular El Pins district.

Besides giving the waterfront a new look, the upgrade is also expected to solve the recurring problems of low levels of sand -- as well as other storm damage -- at S'Abanell beach.

Smokers throughout Spain are no longer allowed to light up a cigarette, pipe or cigar in bars, cafes and other public places after new anti-smoking legislation came into effect on Sunday, January 2.

The new legislation replaces one of Europe's most relaxed anti-smoking laws with one of the strictest.
